What to Expect From Bed Bug Treatment
Bed bug treatment is not a single event — it’s a process. The time it takes depends on the treatment method used, the severity of the infestation, and how well the preparation instructions are followed. Here’s a realistic breakdown of what to expect.
Treatment Methods and Their Timelines
Chemical Treatment (Most Common)
Chemical bed bug treatments use a combination of residual insecticides, contact sprays and dusts applied to all harbourage areas — mattress seams, bed frames, skirting boards, furniture joints, and electrical fittings.
- Day of treatment: You will need to vacate the property for 4–6 hours during treatment. All areas must be prepared in advance (see below)
- Days 1–5: You may still see some bed bugs as surviving individuals contact the treated surfaces. This is normal
- Week 2–4: Activity should significantly decrease as the residual insecticide continues to work
- Follow-up treatment: A second treatment is typically required 2–3 weeks after the first to target any eggs that have hatched since the initial treatment (bed bug eggs are resistant to most insecticides)
- Full resolution: 4–8 weeks for most infestations
Heat Treatment
Whole-room heat treatment raises the temperature of the entire room to above 50°C, killing bed bugs at all life stages — including eggs — in a single treatment.
- Duration: 6–8 hours for a standard bedroom
- Effectiveness: High — kills all life stages in a single treatment
- Limitation: Does not leave a residual effect, so reinfestation from untreated adjacent rooms is possible
- Cost: Higher than chemical treatment, but can resolve an infestation in a single visit
Essential Pre-Treatment Preparation
Proper preparation is critical — inadequate preparation is the primary reason treatments fail. Before your pest controller arrives:
- Wash all bedding, linen, curtains and clothing in the hottest suitable cycle and tumble dry on high
- Place clean items in sealed plastic bags — do not put them back in the room until treatment is complete
- Vacuum the entire room thoroughly, then immediately seal and dispose of the vacuum bag outside
- Clear the floor and move furniture away from walls to allow access to skirting boards
- Remove items from wardrobes and drawers in the affected room
- Do not use insecticide sprays before professional treatment — this can cause bed bugs to scatter
After Treatment: What Not to Do
- Do not vacuum or mop treated surfaces for at least 2 weeks — this removes the residual insecticide
- Do not move furniture or mattresses from the treated room to other rooms (this spreads the infestation)
- Continue to monitor for activity and report any signs to your pest controller within the warranty period
Warranty and Follow-Up
Reputable bed bug treatments come with a warranty period — typically 3–6 months. If bed bug activity is detected within this period, the pest controller should return and re-treat at no additional charge. Always confirm warranty terms before proceeding.
