The Two Most Effective Bird Deterrents
When it comes to professionally excluding pest birds from buildings, bird spikes and bird netting are the two most proven and widely used methods. Each has distinct advantages and limitations, and the right choice depends on the species, the location and the level of bird pressure you’re dealing with.
Bird Spikes
How They Work
Bird spikes are rows of stainless steel or polycarbonate pins installed on ledges, ridgelines, parapets, gutters and window sills. They don’t harm birds — they simply prevent the bird from finding a flat surface to land on, encouraging it to move elsewhere.
Best For
- Ledge-nesting birds like pigeons, Indian mynas and starlings
- Defined ledge areas, ridgelines, AC units, signage and gutters
- Areas where full exclusion with netting is impractical
- Properties where aesthetics are a concern (spikes are relatively discreet)
Limitations
- Less effective against smaller birds that can land between spike rows
- Birds can eventually nest on top of spikes if debris accumulates and is not cleared
- Requires complete coverage of all available ledge area — gaps will be exploited
- Not suitable for large open areas (roof planes, under solar panels)
Bird Netting
How They Work
Heavy-duty UV-stabilised polyethylene netting is tensioned over an area using a cable and anchor system, physically excluding birds from the netted zone. Netting is a complete barrier — no bird of any size can access the protected area.
Best For
- Complete exclusion from large areas: under solar panels, open roof planes, eaves, courtyards
- High bird pressure where spikes alone are insufficient
- Buildings with established bird colonies that have found multiple landing sites
- Agricultural, warehousing and food processing facilities
Limitations
- Higher installation cost than spikes
- Requires periodic inspection to ensure no holes or gaps have developed
- More visible than spikes — can affect the appearance of the building
- Installation must be thorough — any gaps defeat the purpose
Which Should You Choose?
| Factor | Bird Spikes | Bird Netting |
|---|---|---|
| Ledge/ridgeline exclusion | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ Overkill for small areas |
| Large open area exclusion | ❌ Not suitable | ✅ Best option |
| Under solar panels | ❌ Not suitable | ✅ Best option |
| Small birds | ⚠️ Limited | ✅ Effective |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Aesthetics | More discreet | More visible |
In most cases, a combined approach works best — spikes on ledges and ridgelines, netting over larger exclusion zones. A professional assessment will identify the right solution for your property.
