Why Preparation Matters
The success of a professional flea treatment depends heavily on what you do before the technician arrives. Proper preparation maximises chemical contact with flea eggs and larvae in the environment, ensures even coverage, and protects your family and pets during and after treatment.
Flea Treatment Preparation Checklist
The Day Before
- Book a vet appointment for all pets. All pets in the household must be treated with a flea product simultaneously with the home treatment. Your vet can recommend the most appropriate product. This is non-negotiable — untreated pets will re-introduce fleas immediately after treatment.
- Wash all pet bedding, blankets and fabric toys on the hottest suitable cycle and tumble dry, or discard heavily infested items.
- Wash human bedding in all rooms — especially rooms where pets sleep.
Morning of Treatment
- Vacuum all carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture and skirting boards thoroughly. This removes eggs, larvae and food sources for larvae (debris). The vibration also stimulates pupae to hatch sooner, improving treatment effectiveness. Dispose of the vacuum bag in an outside bin immediately.
- Remove all items from floors — toys, shoes, clothes, and anything else stored on the floor. The technician needs unobstructed access to treat all floor surfaces.
- Move furniture away from walls where possible to allow treatment of skirting board areas.
- Pick up any food, dishes, and pet food bowls from the floor. Cover fish tanks and turn off the air pump during treatment.
- Remove people and pets from the home for the duration of the treatment and until the treated surfaces are dry (usually 2–4 hours).
After Treatment
- Do not vacuum or mop treated floors for at least 2 weeks. Cleaning removes the residual insecticide that continues killing hatching fleas after the treatment.
- Expect to see fleas for up to 2 weeks as dormant pupae hatch. This is normal. The newly hatched adults will contact the treated surfaces and be killed.
- Keep pets on their prescribed flea treatment throughout and after the process.
- Book your follow-up treatment for 2–3 weeks after the initial treatment. This is essential for long-term resolution.
What Not to Do
- Do not use any insecticide sprays or flea bombs before the professional treatment — they can repel fleas and disrupt the professional treatment
- Do not mop or clean floors after treatment
- Do not allow re-entry before surfaces are fully dry
- Do not skip treating your pets
Who Needs to Leave the Home?
All people, pets (including fish in uncovered tanks), and birds must leave the home during treatment and remain out until surfaces are dry and the area has been ventilated. Your technician will advise on re-entry time — typically 2 hours minimum.
