Why Wasp Nest Removal Requires Care
Wasps are highly defensive of their nests. Unlike bees, which typically sting once, wasps can sting multiple times and release alarm pheromones that trigger mass stinging from other colony members. Attempting to remove a wasp nest without the right knowledge, protective equipment and treatment approach can result in a serious — potentially life-threatening — encounter.
When You Should NOT Attempt DIY Removal
There are situations where professional removal is not optional:
- The nest is larger than a tennis ball
- The nest is inside a wall cavity, roof void or ceiling
- Anyone in the household has a known allergy to bee or wasp stings (anaphylaxis risk)
- The nest is European wasp (Vespula germanica) — this species is highly aggressive and the colony can number in the thousands
- The nest is in a high-traffic area used by children or pets
Identifying the Species Before Acting
Treatment approach differs by species. Before attempting anything, identify what you’re dealing with:
- Paper wasps (Polistes spp.): Small, open honeycomb nests, typically under eaves. Fewer than 50 individuals. Less aggressive — will usually only sting if the nest is directly disturbed
- European wasps (Vespula germanica): Grey, papery enclosed nests. Often in the ground, inside walls or in roof voids. Colonies of 5,000–15,000. Extremely aggressive
- Mud dauber wasps: Solitary wasps that build small mud tubes on walls. Non-aggressive and rarely sting
DIY Removal: Paper Wasps Only
If you have a small paper wasp nest in an accessible location and no one in the household is allergic, cautious DIY removal may be appropriate.
What you need:
- Full protective clothing — long sleeves, gloves, closed footwear
- A registered wasp killing spray (available from hardware stores)
- A torch (treat at night when wasps are less active)
- An exit route planned before you approach
Steps:
- Wait until after dark — wasps are least active at night and all workers will be in the nest
- Approach slowly without shining light directly on the nest (use a red-filtered torch)
- Apply the wasp spray directly into the nest opening from as far away as the spray allows
- Retreat immediately
- Wait 24–48 hours before approaching again. If activity has ceased, knock the nest down wearing gloves
Professional Wasp Nest Removal
A licensed pest controller will:
- Correctly identify the species and nest location (including hidden nests inside walls)
- Apply registered insecticide directly to the nest entrance in full protective equipment
- Return for follow-up if necessary (particularly for European wasp nests which can be deep underground)
- Advise on prevention to avoid nests reestablishing in the same location
