Why It Matters
Bees and wasps are often confused with each other — and the distinction matters. They behave differently, their nests look different, and the appropriate response to finding them near your home is different. Misidentifying a European wasp nest as a bee hive and trying to leave it alone, or vice versa, can lead to problems.
Physical Differences
| Feature | Honey Bee | European Wasp | Paper Wasp |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body | Robust, fuzzy/hairy | Smooth, shiny, no hair | Slender, smooth, long legs |
| Colour | Golden-amber with dark bands | Bright yellow with black bands | Varies — brown/yellow/black |
| Waist | Less defined | Clearly pinched waist | Very slender, pinched waist |
| Legs in flight | Tucked under body | Tucked under body | Legs hang down visibly |
| Size | 12–15mm | 12–17mm | 15–25mm |
Behavioural Differences
Bees
- Generally docile unless the hive is directly threatened
- Honey bees die after stinging (their barbed stinger pulls out with the venom sac)
- Attracted to flowers and gardens for nectar and pollen
- Swarms are usually calm and not aggressive
European Wasps
- Highly aggressive — will sting with little provocation when near the nest
- Can sting multiple times without dying
- Attracted to meat, sugary drinks, fruit and human food — commonly found at BBQs and outdoor dining areas
- Peak aggression in late summer and autumn as colonies reach maximum size
Paper Wasps
- Moderately defensive — generally only sting if the nest is directly threatened
- Can sting multiple times
- Beneficial predators — they hunt caterpillars and other insects to feed their larvae
Nest Differences
| Species | Nest appearance | Common location |
|---|---|---|
| Honey bee | Wax comb in enclosed cavity | Tree hollows, wall cavities, roof voids |
| European wasp | Grey papery enclosed ball | Ground, wall cavities, roof voids |
| Paper wasp | Open honeycomb, no outer covering | Under eaves, pergolas, fences |
