Don’t Wait for a Customer Complaint or a Failed Audit
In a commercial environment, pest problems rarely announce themselves loudly. A rat colony can become established in a ceiling void, cockroaches can populate a kitchen without being seen during business hours, and termites can be silently destroying structural timber for years. Knowing the early warning signs gives you the chance to act before the problem escalates into a compliance or reputational issue.
Signs of Rodents (Rats and Mice)
- Droppings: Small, dark, spindle-shaped droppings along walls, behind equipment and under shelving. Rat droppings are 10–20mm long; mouse droppings are smaller (3–6mm).
- Gnaw marks: Rats and mice gnaw continuously on packaging, timber, cables and pipes. Fresh gnaw marks are pale; older marks are darker.
- Rub marks: Dark, greasy smears along walls and skirting boards from the oils in rodent fur — particularly visible in high-traffic rodent paths.
- Nesting material: Shredded paper, insulation, fabric or plant matter in hidden corners, ceiling voids or behind equipment.
- Unusual sounds: Scratching, scurrying or squeaking from walls, ceiling cavities or under floors — especially at night.
- Damaged stock: Chewed packaging or product — a critical concern for food businesses.
Signs of Cockroaches
- Droppings: Small, dark, cylindrical droppings in drawers, behind appliances, inside cupboards and along wall junctions.
- Egg cases (oothecae): Brown, purse-shaped egg capsules in hidden areas — each can produce 10–30 nymphs.
- Musty odour: Established cockroach infestations produce a distinctive musty, oily smell — particularly noticeable in kitchens.
- Live cockroaches during the day: Cockroaches are nocturnal — seeing them during daylight hours often signals a significant population forcing individuals out of their harborage.
- Smear marks: Brown, irregular smear marks along horizontal surfaces and wall-floor junctions in damp areas.
Signs of Ants
- Trails of ants moving to or from a food or water source
- Ant activity in or near food storage, preparation or waste areas
- Small piles of fine soil or sand (entry point excavations) along wall junctions
Signs of Termites
- Mud tubes on walls, piers or other structural elements
- Hollow-sounding timber when tapped
- Bubbling or uneven paint surfaces on timber
- Discarded wings near windows or entry points (from a termite swarm)
Signs of Stored Product Pests (Warehouses and Food Premises)
- Weevils, moths or beetles in or near dry food storage
- Fine webbing in grain, flour or other dry goods
- Powdery residue or clumping in stored dry products
